Three Lions Coach Reveals His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
Ten years back, the England assistant coach competed in League Two. Currently, he is focused on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. The road from player to coach commenced with a voluntary role coaching youngsters. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He realized his purpose.
Rapid Rise
His advancement has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation for innovative drills and excellent people skills. His stints with teams took him to top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a systematic approach so we can to have the best chance.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. The approach feature player analysis, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms such as "break".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry notes. “We had to build something where players are eager to join and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he declares. “We seek to command the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and set new standards. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.
“We get 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. It’s to take it from idea to information to understanding to action.
“To build a methodology for effective use in the 50 days, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We must dedicate moments on the phone with them, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
Upcoming Matches
He is getting ready for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the style of play should represent the best aspects from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the adaptability, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.
“For it to feel easy, it's crucial to offer an approach that enables them to operate similar to weekly matches, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges for managers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are focusing to increase tempo across those 24 metres.”
Passion for Progress
Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, as his cohort included stars including former players. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He completed the course with top honors, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff while keeping Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea became Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
