The Game's Rolling Dodge Merits Praise
Having spent time with Elden Ring, or most other 3D action game, you're probably acquainted with the wonderful mechanic called the “dodge roll.” This avoidance maneuver lets your avatar to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward somersault to dodge any enemy attacks and move away from the bad guy. Seems useful, doesn't it?
This rolling move, however, has attracted a lot of flak, and not just as a result of the somersault; it's been called unintelligent, a cheap tactic, and an implausible action — and in some cases, I agree. Picture me somersaulting past local Doppler gangs in another popular RPG — they can't hit me! But Elden Ring's dodge roll stands as the roll to outdo all previous dodge rolls, and let me explain.
For this particular game, the designers identified a clever approach to respond to all views suggesting the technique is not challenging enough: merely bestow each opponent excessive power, triple that, and each player character who approaches them will appreciate deeply because of their evasion move, I'm no exception. Given the intense difficulty, pulling off a perfect dodge comes across as a triumph, rather than a cheap trick.
No alternative avoidance technique in Elden Ring approaches this sense of satisfaction and dependability, because swift moves offer limited distance and guard stances get quickly shattered by powerful foes. A person once suggested jumping as a go-to Elden Ring dodging technique, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me receiving a fatal blow might boost my prospects of overcoming challenges (skill issue, perhaps).
Mastering the Technique
Although the dodge roll provides relief in an incredibly challenging experience, it requires practice. First of all, the game's dodge roll merely initiates a frame of protection once you release the evasion key, which prevents a hasty, frantic retreat from dire situations. Additionally, even though it can carry you off from foes, it's much better to utilize it as a moment to advance, optimally at their back, and land some hits. And, finally, it remains necessary to comprehend and predict enemy attacks, since evading too early of a prolonged preparation could conclude your immunity before the blow lands… causing significant harm.
A Well-Designed Feature
While dodge-rolling in quick succession might seem rather absurd (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in Elden Ring. Certainly, that still doesn't make it a plausible combat move — which is precisely why it would be dreadful to see it in a game like a realism-focused RPG — yet we're discussing a flashy fantasy title under discussion, therefore, it doesn't matter?
Similar to any respectable dodge roll, this title's dodge motion is enhanced with a small acrobatic jump at the commencement, giving it an energetic feel instead of dropping the character onto the ground. Based on your equipment, the technique may seem extremely nimble or somewhat sluggish, however, it's consistently swifter and more seamless than the rolling dodges found in the previous titles. Admittedly, you may embed your oversized sword in the dirt if you're carrying one, but that's on you for not just playing alternative arms (In jest — steer clear of the game using ranged options).
The Perfect Balance
Elden Ring's evasion system establishes an ideal equilibrium between challenge and opportunity, offering hope of victory while threatening to take that hope away at the smallest error. Perfect this move, and you'll be rewarded with not just victory, but gratification.
