The 2026 cars are set to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly compared to current models.

F1 has unveiled the official terminology that will be used to reference the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is introducing what is potentially the most significant regulation change in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the mandatory use of fully sustainable fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced electrical capacity, necessitating key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, drivers will carefully oversee electrical energy – potentially on flying laps – to secure the optimal performance.

Wide-ranging research were carried out with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terminology would make things clearer of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The primary aim was to present a range of advanced features of the sport as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of descriptive names that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that competitors will have increased agency to make decisions regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and saving energy.

The 2026 rules introduce a series of modes that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to enhance the viewers' comprehension of the on-track action.

  • Passing Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a short boost of battery power available when a car is close behind the car ahead to execute an overtake.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the ERS that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be used with calculation, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the corners for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can recharge the energy store with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the end of straights or in sections where only reduced throttle is applied.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will move on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the battery and motor, up from about one-fifth electric power under present rules.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the removal of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the intricate and expensive device that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from biomass or synthetic production methods.
