Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
