Fury Explodes as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Criticism

Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Statement

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Arrest

Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

This is a appalling and vile comment,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.

Fellow GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
