Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The clip, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in armed forces or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to safeguard and defend this constitution," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our national charter."
The Former President's Angry Response
The video message seemed to prompt a angry response from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This represents really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader issued a unified declaration denouncing the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our nation with tremendous national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and withdraw his aggressive discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Firm Response
The officials who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who value this country and made an vow to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the ex-president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
More Partisan Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's remarks and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of the government instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the offense of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the official declared. "We see sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the US military, to active duty service members urging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our armed forces relies on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are essentially promoting."
