But with his boastful, frequently aggressive conduct toward foreign nations, the current president has quickly resurrected that concept. During his tenure, the Ugly American is back.

International Involvement

Trump has acted like an Ugly American in multiple situations. He has interfered in the domestic matters of Brazil by virtually commanding it to abandon the criminal charges of its right-leaning ex-leader (and personal friend) Jair Bolsonaro for conspiring to stage a coup to resume leadership. As a response, he implemented an further import tax on Canadian goods. This action further angered Canadians who were already angered about the unrealistic concept to turn Canada into the additional U.S. state.

Trump has also tried to pressure the South American nation. He declared the America would end support to the nation after its president, Gustavo Petro, complained that the US had struck a Colombian fishing boat and killed a fisher as part of the administration's effort of striking ships suspected of carrying narcotics. Using unpleasant, undiplomatic language, he labeled the nation's leader an “drug trade figurehead”.

Military Intimidation
