A Special Release Pikachu Promo Aims to Curb the Influence On Speculators

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators and London's Natural History Museum will launch a pop-up shop featuring special items. Enthusiasts will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, though, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a free bonus for the pop-up. This shop will operate both on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome filled with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. The concept is what an in-world scientist could produce after trainers submit their data, or a naturalist's journal might have created had the famous islands teemed with flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal stems from the book's scholarly approach, treating Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common to issue to release promos celebrating major tournaments and crossover partnerships. A lot of these collector items often feature the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new museum card however, is the distinctly bigger size. Although precise specs have not been publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be highly restricted, and fans able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Speculator Activity

According to an official statement, a portion of the merchandise will also be sold beyond the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire this promo via the online Pokémon Center. While speculator demand is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have trouble stockpiling large numbers on this occasion. If you're feeling left out, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny of sales from the museum store and from its web shop, which covers Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the efforts of hundreds of researchers dedicated to conducting studies and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," the statement notes.
