A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Sailboats Declared Missing following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing sailboats loaded with relief goods traveling from Mexico to Cuba.
Maritime Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were carrying no fewer than nine personnel, according to a official statement.
The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.
Background of Aid to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That boat, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, drugs, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader International Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with more than 50k surgeries called off in Cuba due to power shortages.
Foreign policy measures have intensified in recent months, with remarks from various leaders emphasizing the delicate nature of diplomatic ties.
Reacting to previous comments, a prominent government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that early stages of negotiations commenced, although their present status remains not publicly known.
The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the sailboats and guarantee the well-being of the people on board.
At this time, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
